Heel Pain FAQ

A bone spur, also known as an osteophyte, develops along the edges of a bone. The bony growth often appears where two bones come together. They can also appear near joints. A bone spur can occur anywhere in the body, including the spine. One of the most common causes of bone spurs is the damage often caused by the bone after an arthritis diagnosis.

As arthritis begins to wear away the bone, more calcium is sent to repair the damage. With more and more calcium being sent to the area, bony protrusions begin to form. Over time, they can become so pronounced they push against other tissues causing pain and discomfort as the person moves.

The feet and heels bear the brunt of the body’s entire weight as a person walks, runs or stands in one place for a prolonged period of time. There are many conditions that can affect the bones and tissues in the heels and the feet causing intense pain and discomfort. Plantar fasciitis affects the thick strip of fascia that runs from the toes to the heel.

Bone spurs are protrusions that occur along the anterior aspect of the Calcaneus (heel bone), due to the stretching of the plantar fascia. Fallen arches are the most common reason for plantar fascia stretching, usually due to excessive body weight or repeated stresses upon structure from running, walking or jumping.

Heel pain has many causes. Not only does the heel bear the brunt of a person’s body weight with each step, it also absorbs the shock of the body as a person runs. This can cause plantar fasciitis or strains within the joints. There are ways to prevent heel and foot pain, however. One of the most effective ways is to wear shoes that fit properly.

If a person has a structural abnormality that affects how their feet meet the ground when they walk, being fitted with customized orthotics may be the answer. Customized orthotics distribute the pressure of the body evenly along the bottom of the foot while maintaining all three-foot arches, thus taking pressure off the entire heel structure.
